Portugal will take on the United States on Tuesday in the last group game of the Women’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup at Eden Park.
Match Review
The Seleccaao das Quinas started their World Cup campaign by losing 1-0 to the Netherlands, who scored a winner in the 15th minute of the first half.
On the other hand, Portugal got back on track by thrashing Vietnam 2-0 in their second group game, thanks to strikes from debutants Telma Encarnaca and Benfica’s Franciscoa Nazareth, Which means they qualify if they beat USA, with a draw being enough in the case of the Netherlands losing to Vietnam.
After winning 2-0 against Vietnam last time out, Portugal will aim to become the 1st European debutants to win two games in a group phase at a Women’s World Cup since the 1999 edition in Russia.
They will also aim to be the 1st European team to defeat the reigning world champions in a game in the group stage (D2 L6).
In Group E, the USA thrashed Vietnam 5-0 in their opening game, scoring three goals without reply from Sophia Smith and one from Lindsey Horan.
In their second match, however, the Netherlands held the US to a scoreless draw. The Americans fell behind early and Horan levelled the match in the second half.
USA have usually had a strong end to the group stage at Women’s World Cups, winning their last group game in seven of their last eight games, with the exception of the 2-1 defeat to Sweden in 2011. However, they still finished runners up in that year.
With four points, the US just need a point to guaranteed a place in the knockouts.
