What is the methodology behind the FIFA Women’s World Cup standings ?

FIFA Women’s World Cup standings is determine on the basis of a points system which used to rank teams during the group stage of the competition, This is how it goes :

Group Stage :

  • The tournament starts with a group stage, Where all playing nations of the tournament were divided into eight groups (Group A to Group H) of four teams each.
  • Teams in each group will play against each other in a round-robin system.
  • With the top two position teams advances to the next round i.e. Knockout stage.
  • Based on their performance in each game, teams are given points : For Win : 3 points, For Draw 1 point, For Loss : 0 point.

Ranking of Teams :

The ranking of teams in the group stage is determined as follows:

Teams are positioned or ranked within their groups according to their combined points which they add-up during the group stage matches. If two or more teams have same number of points than the following Tie-breaking criteria for group play will be used in the given order :

  1. Goal Difference ( Total Goal scored – Total Goal conceded) in all group matches;
  2. Total Goals Scored in all group matches;
  3. Comparisons of the tied teams through Head-to-Head results (via Points obtained, Goal difference, Goals scored);
  4. Fair play points in all group matches (based on points obtained on yellow and red card received) :
  • Yellow card: −1 point;
  • Indirect red card (second yellow card): −3 points;
  • Direct red card: −4 points;
  • Yellow card and direct red card: −5 points;

5. Drawing of lots

Knockout Stage :

The knockout stage will be the second and the final stage of the tournament, following the group stage matches. For 2023 FIFA Women’s World cup the knockout stage will begin with the round of 16 matches and end on 20 August with the final match. More details regarding the knockout stage are as follows :

  • The top two positions teams from each of the eight group (Sixteen teams in total) advance to the knockout stage.
  • The knockout stage consists of all matches after the group stage i.e. Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Third Place match and the Final match.
  • In the knockout stage, there are no draws if the match is level at the end of 90 minutes of normal playing time, As matches are decided first, by extra time( two periods of 15 minutes each), And than by penalty shootouts to determine the winner.
