Keely Hodgkinson Leads Great Britain to a Medal Haul of 10 at World Athletics Championships

Keely Hodgkinson helped Great Britain equal its best-ever medal haul of 10 at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Sunday.

The 21-year-old won silver in the women’s 800m, just behind Mary Moraa of Kenya. Hodgkinson’s time of 1:56.34 was the third fastest of her career.

Hodgkinson’s silver medal was the first of three for Great Britain on Sunday. The men’s and women’s 4x400m relay quartets both won bronze.

In the men’s race, Alex Haydock-Wilson, Charlie Dobson, Lewis Davey and Rio Mitcham finished behind the United States and France. In the women’s race, Laviai Nielsen, Amber Anning, Ama Pipi and Nicole Yeargin finished behind the Netherlands and the United States.

Morgan Lake came within a whisker of making it an even better night for the British contingent in the high jump by clearing 1.97 metres. However, she could not clear 1.99 metres and had to settle for fourth place.

Hodgkinson said she was “proud” of her performance in the 800m final, and that she would be aiming for gold in the future.

Reekie said she was “brave” in her race, but that she had “a lot of work to do” if she wanted to challenge for a medal.

Haydock-Wilson said he was “gutted” not to have won gold in the men’s relay, but that he was “proud” of his team’s performance.

Nielsen said she was “happy” with the bronze medal in the women’s relay, and that she was “looking forward to the Commonwealth Games next year”.

Lake said she was “disappointed” not to have won a medal in the high jump, but that she was “proud” of her performance.

The performance of the British track and field team at the World Championships was outstanding and they will be looking to continue their success in the future.
