Britain’s record-equaling medal haul at the World Athletics Championships was capped off by two bronze medals in the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays.
The women’s team, anchored by Nicole Yeargin, held off Poland to finish third in 3:21.04, while the men’s team, anchored by Rio Mitcham, came home behind Jamaica and France in 2:58.71.
Yeargin stepped in for Victoria Ohuruogu, who was omitted from the team at the last minute due to an anti-doping investigation. Mitcham replaced Matt Hudson-Smith, who was ruled out with an Achilles injury.
Britain’s medal haul of two golds, three silvers, and five bronze was their best since 2015.
“I was happy to be in the position I was and I held my own,” Yeargin said. “The last two meters I was swimming for the line!”
“That just shows the depth that we have, the belief that we have in ourselves,” Mitcham said. “Whoever steps onto the track, we’re going to do the job.”
Britain’s success at the World Athletics Championships is a major boost ahead of next year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
Nights to remember 🙌
