Australia will face England in the semi-final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup today (August 16, at 8pm AEST / 11am UK) at Stadium Australia as they look to qualify for Sunday’s final against Spain.
The Matildas will take on England at Stadium Australia, with both teams hoping to progress to the semi-finals against Spain on Sunday in Sydney.
Match Preview
The hosts have already broken this tournament’s all-time records after qualifying for their first semi-final. Their next target will almost certainly be the final after Australia triumphed in a thrilling quarterfinal against France – a result that should boost their self-assurance ahead of Saturday’s clash with England.
The Matildas will be hoping to maintain their solid defence, which has not conceded a goal in its last three games, but home support is likely to be their greatest strength. Australia Stadium’s capacity of 80,000 will be a major factor – though England are accustomed to large crowds.

The Lionesses labored to a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in the Round of 16, with the match going to penalties after both teams failed to register a goal.
The team then went on to face Colombia in Sydney in the quarter-final. After going behind, England clawed their way back to 1-1 thanks to a goal from Lauren Hemp. The match went into the break tied at 1-1, with England’s Alessia Russo scoring the winner to put England through to the semi-finals.

Team News
Speaking ahead of his team’s semi-final opponent, Tony Gustavsson said : “When it comes to the line-up we’ll have a discussion tonight again about minutes, I think consistency and chemistry are key for any team that wants to be successful in tournaments.”
“I have some tough decisions to make tonight – I have a lot of player availability. What we’ll do is look at always trying to start as strong as possible but finish even stronger. Meaning what kind of starting line-up do we want to have, but also what kind of finishing XI do we want to have – what kind of tool, game-changer, do we think we need in a game like this? Type of players – whether it’s speed or aerial presence or closing out a game.
“There’ll be some long conversations tonight and some tough decisions to be made. A lot of players deserve to start, but a lot of players also deserve to finish the game and win it for us.”
