France won 2-1 over Brazil on Saturday at Brisbane stadium to stay in contention for a place in the knockouts of the Women’s World Cup. The match was very close as both teams had plenty of chances to score.

France took the lead early in the first half thanks to a goal from Eugenia Le Sommer. Brazil equalized late in the second half thanks to Debinha’s goal. It looked like the match was going to be tied at 1-1, but in the 83th minute of the second half, France got a late winner from Wendie Renard to put the finishing touches on the win.

France are now in first place in Group F with four point, one behind Brazil and one ahead of Jamaica, who are in third place and must win their final match or draw to stay in the tournament.

This was a nail-biting affair at the end, as France earn 3 huge points to stay in the hunt for a spot in the knock-out stage. France, who had 19 shots to Brazil’s 10, were the better team all night.

Brazil will have one more chance to avoid elimination when they host Jamaica on Sunday, August 6.
On the same day, France will face Panama, who will be looking for a win to move on to the next round.

Brazil Head coach Pia Sundhage took full responsibility for Brazil’s performance in today’s match against France :

“I did not make the players feel connected. In the second half we tried to do it.

“I am really happy we have a second chance against Jamaica [for progression]. I need to learn how to make the team more joyful and make them more prepared for the next game” she said.
