The Matildas have earned a place in the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time in their history, having defeated both Canada (7th) and Denmark (13th), but have yet to face an expansive team such as Les Bleus. The Matildas have achieved their progress through a combination of early goal scoring and strong defensive play.

France struggled at times in the first half of the group phase, losing 0-0 to Jamaica and needing a winner in the 83rd minute to beat Brazil, 2-1. They stormed back to beat Panama 6-3 and then crushed Morocco, 4-0, in the round of 16 to demonstrate their strength at both ends of the field.
