The Matildas will take on France as they bid to progress to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Match Preview

The Matildas have earned a place in the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time in their history, having defeated both Canada (7th) and Denmark (13th), but have yet to face an expansive team such as Les Bleus. The Matildas have achieved their progress through a combination of early goal scoring and strong defensive play.

France struggled at times in the first half of the group phase, losing 0-0 to Jamaica and needing a winner in the 83rd minute to beat Brazil, 2-1. They stormed back to beat Panama 6-3 and then crushed Morocco, 4-0, in the round of 16 to demonstrate their strength at both ends of the field.

In a Women’s World Cup tune-up friendly against France last month, Australia triumphed 1-0, but they’ll need to be at their best to repeat the result. There’s also the question of Sam Kerr’s fitness, with the star forward coming off the bench for just 10 minutes last time out.

Team News

Australia

In the press conference ahead of the match, the head coach was asked about striker Sam Kerr’s return to the starting line-up after fans saw him in action during the win over Denmark. “I want to be very clear in here now to say if Sam is fit to play 90 minutes, she is starting. There’s not even a question and the team knows it.”

“Whether she is ready to play 90 minutes plus extra time, that’s to be decided tonight. But there is no question whatsoever that if she is, she is starting.”

France

France qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the fourth time in a row, winning 10 out of 10 matches in Group I qualifying.

France started Group F with two wins and a draw, starting with a goalless draw against Jamaica. They then flew from Sydney to Brisbane to record their first win, a narrow 2-1 triumph over Brazil.

Australia vs France Predictions

Hayley Raso (Real Madrid) is aiming for her fourth goal for Australia and her speed could trouble France’s defence. The only player who can stop Diani is Steph Catley (Arsenal) who’s also scored twice.

In the French national team, the 24-year-old Diani will be hoping to keep up the good form that has earned her four goals and three assists in as many games. Eugenia Le Sommer, meanwhile, will be hoping to add to her three goals.

We predict Australia 2-1 France
