Harry Kane missed a late penalty as England’s World Cup dreams ended in a heartbreaking defeat to reigning champions France in a blockbuster quarter-final clash.

France’s all-time scorer Olivier Giroud restored the World Cup holders’ lead and it proved to be the winner after Kane blazed over a late penalty in a crushing 2-1 quarter-final exit.

France will now face Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday as they edge closer in their title defense.
France are through to the semi-finals of the World Cup after a 2-1 win over England. The holders broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through Tchouameni’s long-range strike into the bottom corner. England made a bright start to the second half though and were awarded a penalty after Saka was tripped, and Kane fired it into the back of the net. Giroud restored France’s lead in the 78th minute with a header from close range and the Three Lions had another chance to equalize from the spot, but Kane blazed that one high over the bar.

France becomes the first reigning champion to reach the World Cup semi-finals since Brazil in 1998.

With that last chance from Rashford, the whistle is soon blown and France go through to the World Cup semi-finals.

England provided a wonderful fightback, but in the end the penalty miss from Kane will be discussed about in the tabloids over the days to come.

Les Bleus march on to the final four, where they will next face Morocco for a chance to repeat as World Cup finalists on December 18.
